GREENPEACE AFRICA: You are being force-fed plastic by wealthy countries

Tell the world's top polluters to #BreakFreeFromPlastic!

A shocking new report published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Neglected: Environmental Justice Impacts of Plastic Pollution, delves into plastic and environmental inequality.

The report exposes how the plastic industry is capitalising on “false solutions” such as recycling. But the truth is single-use plastic waste is being shipped off to poorer countries rather than being recycled as consumers are made to believe. It also demonstrates the impact of plastic at every stage of its production on underprivileged communities.

Last year's Kenya-US free trade agreement negotiations debacle is an example of how the plastic industry bullies African governments, who are trying their best to manage the plastic pollution crisis. More recently, in the DRC, corporations are ignoring anti-plastic legislation and this is forcing governments to make large investments into the enforcement of these laws.

In other words - our leaders are pushed to bend their laws so that the plastic industry can continue with its profit making agenda.

I’ll say it again: recycling is a false solution to our plastic pollution crisis. This report by UNEP not only supports this fact but shows us the devastating impact of single-use plastic pollution if we continue to believe in corporate greenwashing.

Join millions of people from around the world demanding an end to plastic production. Sign this petition against the world's top polluters now!
