Solar for Schools Community Project
The Solar for Schools Community Project was established under the Solar Up Nigeria (SUN) program of Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment to provide access to solar power for rural electrification. This project targeted rural community schools to provide access to 247 electricity and power education increasing children’s interest to go to school by 300%.
For the first pilot, we installed a 2.5 KW solar system at Community Secondary School, Ebenebe, Anambra state with funding from Access Bank PLC to power the schools computer center and enable the kids hold computer practical classes. The school is totally off grid and had to harvest palm fruit growing in the school premises, then sold these to afford to “rent’ a generator once in a week so that SS3 students only could take computer practical classes.
The first day we arrived the school premises, we saw kids (99% girls) sent out of the class to pick palm fruits for the market.

In the 21st century, ICT education, digital skills and computer literacy have become paramount for jobs and professional growth. The situation required urgent attention and with 247 electricity in the school all students can learn computer, study in a well ventilated library and study at night in the school.
