BURKINA FASO: a call for tenders for the recovery of used plastic packaging

Burkina Faso wants to move up a notch in the fight against plastic pollution. To do this, the government of the West African country is looking for two organizations to strengthen the plastic waste recovery system and for the manufacture of biodegradable packaging.
The call for tenders launched on December 18, 2023 in the capital Ouagadougou by the Burkinabe Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation, through the Environmental Intervention Fund (FIE), will be open until January 18, 2023. It concerns research structures, economic interest groups (EIG), cooperatives, private operators, associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), unions of cooperatives or groups , federations or confederations of cooperatives or groups.
The organizations selected following the call for expressions of interest will have a total envelope of 750 million CFA francs (approximately 1.15 million euros) allocated by the Burkinabe State to carry out projects aimed at reducing poverty. plastic pollution which continues to grow over the years. According to the Burkinabe Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation, the production of plastic waste increased from 104,011 tonnes per year in 2010 to 224,437 tonnes in 2021.
At the same time, imports of plastics have also doubled over the past decade in the country led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, from 60,000 tonnes per year in 2019 to 118,000 tonnes in 2021.
