The team behind Women Up
The women Up team is made up of physical education teachers from the schools that Women up sessions are taking place, the role of the teachers is to help to mentor the girls to understand the changes that they go through, both physical and emotional. This sessions will help the girls to know what to do especially when they have their menses while participating in sports. Menstruation is a ‘taboo’ subject in many cultures and its effect on women’s participation in sport and physical culture and the community where we conduct our sessions is no exception.
The dominant constraints to participation in Sports activities is related to practical challenges of hygiene and waste disposal for managing menstruation. This causes negative and emotional responses to women to ‘missing out’ on Sports activities with the majority of concerns about their performance in socio-cultural contexts related to personal anxieties. The teachers commented on their belief in being a role model in professional work encouraging open discussion around menstruation and enabling more women and girls to take part in adventurous activities.
