The municipalities of the Ziguinchor region located in the south of Senegal now have human capital capable of implementing projects in the collection and recycling of solid waste.

In Senegal, a training workshop on sanitation has just closed in the Ziguinchor region located 435 kilometers from the capital Dakar. It was intended for 95 municipal agents, notably from the municipalities of Niaguis (border with Guinea-Bissau) and Oussouye, populated by 52,000 inhabitants.

Learners were equipped with methods of collecting and recycling solid waste in these seaside areas where commercial activities generate tons of industrial and food waste. According to the Project to Promote Integrated Management and the Economy of Solid Waste in Senegal (Promoged), this initiative focused on sanitation will contribute to strengthening the economic attractiveness of Senegal.

For the deputy governor of Ziguinchor in charge of Administrative Affairs, the 95 agents will have the mission of promoting waste recycling in their respective municipalities. “The beneficiaries of the training will be able to understand and fully carry out their functions and responsibilities so that waste is now a resource that makes it possible to create jobs and wealth for our national economy,” explained Sidi Guissé Diongue .

For several years, the Senegalese government has placed hygiene and sanitation at the center of its territorial policy, notably with an investment of 70 million CFA francs (1.1 million euros) for the development of waste collection points. . In August 2023, for example, Promoged installed 29 in the Senegalese capital with the aim of facilitating the transport of household waste to dedicated treatment centers.
