What is the EKOenergy ecolabel?

02 07 2019 | 15:06

EKOenergy is a nonprofit and international ecolabel for renewable electricity and gas. The ecolabel is hosted by Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and was launched in February 2013 with the help of environmental organisations from 19 countries. As of 2019, the ecolabel successfully reaches out to energy consumers and sellers in more than 40 countries worldwide.

The EKOenergy ecolabel provides consumers, organisations and climate campaigns with concrete instruments for climate action.  EKOenergy labelled electricity and gas comes from installations that fulfil EKOenergy’s sustainability criteria. These criteria guarantee minimal impact on the local environment. In other words, EKOenergy only approves power plants that have minimum damage on the local ecosystem.

Thus EKOenergy helps energy consumers to fight climate change and protect biodiversity by making the right choice. The ecolabel makes it easy for consumers to find an electricity product that has minimum impact on the environment.

EKOenergy’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) exceed 1.2 million euros.

When a consumer chooses EKOenergy labelled energy, they also help finance renewable energy projects in the developing world. For every megawatt hour (MWh) of EKOenergy labelled energy sold, 0.10€ goes to EKOenergy Climate Fund. The fund finances projects aimed at alleviating energy poverty and providing sustainable energy production where it is needed most.

EKOenergy’s Climate Fund provides additionality by financing clean energy projects in the developing world to combat energy poverty. For each MWh of EKOenergy labelled hydropower sales, another 0.10€ are reinvested in river restoration projects.

Thanks to licensed EKOenergy sellers and users, by 2019 we have raised 1,215,011€ and financed 60 projects that wouldn't have happened without EKOenergy.  The ecolabel is a tool for climate action (SDG No. 13) and responsible production and consumption (SDG No.12). Our funds provide clean and affordable electricity (SDG No. 7) and individual projects address several SDGs such as life below water (SDG No. 14), sustainable cities and communities (SDG No.11), reduced inequalities (SDG No. 10), good health and wellbeing (SDG No.3) and others.

Most recent: EKOenergy Fashion Campaign #PassionForGreenFashion

The fashion industry is a major consumer of energy and one of the most polluting industries in the world, accounting for 5% of global CO2 emissions.  With the help of EKOenergy volunteers from 6 different countries, we launched a fashion campaign to inform and convince the fashion industry and their supply chain. Using sustainably produced renewable energy and inspiring other market players is easy with EKOenergy.

Using the EKOenergy logo for sustainability communication

The ecolabel is a tool for companies and individuals to demonstrate their commitment to renewable energy. Using the logo informs and encourages others to do the same. The EKOenergy logo is easily recognisable and is protected in different continents.

Leading companies in sustainability choose EKOenergy to go the extra mile. Since 2018, six RE100 companies started using EKOenergy as part of their leadership in promoting renewable energy. You can watch our short video to see how why companies use EKOenergy and put the logo on their products: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0_1__2Qg1M&t=4s
