Looking at the world that was and what could be in our annual power and energy feature
In our annual power and energy prognosis & predictions feature, energy policy, Electricity Sector Association of Kenya (ESAK) CEO George Aluru looks what happened in 2025 and what to look out for in 2026.
Prognosis for 2025
The African power sector in 2025 saw a renewed focus on alleviating energy poverty in the continent. The M300 initiative of the World Bank, AfDB and The Rockefeller Foundation among others kicked off an initiative to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030. This has seen 29 countries draw up energy compacts making commitments on reforms and the intention to bring on board further private sector financing into the power sector.
Electricity is one of the most important factors of production and a basis to alleviate poverty. The compacts have countries showcasing ambitions to build transformational infrastructure (transmission lines and power plants) to support economic growth. Lenders are lining up to deploy financing for these initiatives.
