Greta Thunberg tells UK leaders ‘You did not act in time’.
Greta Thunberg visited Parliament today to meet with British MPs to discuss the climate crisis.
After meeting with MPs, Greta addressed a group of people to warn of the consequences of the climate crisis. In the speech, the Swedish activist told the UK leaders 'you did not act in time.’
The 16 year old student did brand the UK as ‘special’ referencing its ‘mind-blowing historical carbon debt but also for its current very creative carbon accounting’. Between 2017 and 2018, greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 3 per cent in Britain, despite increasing globally.
While at Parliament, Greta met with Green MP Caroline Lucas, Environment Minister Michael Gove and former Labour MP Ed Miliband. Notably, Theresa May was absent from these discussions.
In the Prime Minister Questions last week, when Theresa May was asked whether she planned to meet the Swedish activist, she avoided the question, saying she had already met with ‘plenty of young leaders’.
In the speech, Greta references the fact that despite campaigning for months across Europe, there has been no action. She said: “But no one seems to be talking about it, and nothing has changed. In fact, the emissions are still rising.”
Students, inspired by Greta, have been striking around the world every Friday to demand action from world leaders. They maintain that they will strike every Friday until governments respond and solutions are provided.
The Extinction Rebellion campaign group have been demonstrating in London for a week now, demanding climate justice. It has been reported that during this time, over 1,000 people were arrested. But still, there has been no real action or response from the Government.
