Bolloré Ports, the subsidiary of the French group Bolloré, has awarded its Green Terminal label to Owendo Container Terminal (OCT), the manager of the container terminal in the Port of Libreville in Gabon. The reduction of 9% of its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) between 2018 and 2021 will have enabled the operator to obtain this distinction which rewards the efforts in matters of environmental preservation within the port concessions of the Bolloré Group in Africa.

After Dakar Terminal in Senegal and Conakry Terminal in Guinea, Owendo Container Terminal (OCT), the operator of the container terminal in the Port of Libreville in Gabon, becomes the 7th port concession of Bolloré Ports, the subsidiary of the French Bolloré group, to receive the Green Terminal label.

According to Bureau Veritas, which audited the environmental performance of the largest logistics platform in Gabon, this Green Terminal certification took into account eight criteria, including work processes, the construction of infrastructures that comply with international standards and the training of employees in good practices related to environmental issues.

In concrete terms, the gradual switch to 100% electric equipment has enabled OCT to reduce the carbon intensity of each container handled by 33%. The port operator’s commitment to environmental responsibility has also been evident in recent years in waste recovery, air treatment and energy transition.

“We are proud of the progress made since the launch of our environmental approach. We are continuing its deployment in the network with Bureau Veritas to offer our partners and users logistics solutions that are both efficient and eco-responsible,” says Olivier de Noray, Managing Director of Ports and Terminals at Bolloré Ports.

The Green Terminal label initiated in June 2021 by Bolloré Ports aims to encourage the consideration of sustainability in the container terminals it manages around the world, following the example of Owendo Container Terminal, which is developing a subcontracting policy in Gabon.OCT also carries out social actions with the help of its 300 local employees. These include family reintegration and medical care (consultations, hospitalizations, medication) for around 100 disadvantaged young people from the Arc en ciel association based in Libreville.
