Certification as a tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Biofuels are seen as a key means to decarbonise the transport sector, with growing quantities of green fuels set to be used in planes and ships, as well as road transport.

Prior to being sold in the EU, biofuels are subject to certification from voluntary schemes. These schemes assert that green fuels are produced in line with EU sustainability criteria.

In this special report, Euractiv examines the role of biofuel certification schemes, exploring their contribution to the EU goals of reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding biodiversity.

Global certification body the ISCC has revised down the extremely high quantities of used cooking oil reportedly collected in Italy and Malta for biofuels production, saying that the original figures were the result of accounting errors in the submitted data.
