SENEGAL: in Thiès, Infinity will store wind energy from Taïba N'Diaye from 2025
The National Electricity Company of Senegal (Senelec) signs a power purchase contract (CAE) with Infinity Power. It concerns the installation of an electricity storage system for the Taïba N'Diaye wind farm in the Thiès region in western Senegal.
In Senegal, the project to build an electricity storage system for the Taïba N'Diaye wind farm is taking shape. The project developer, Infinity Power, which continues to operate the wind farm after the acquisition of Lekela Power, has just concluded a power purchase contract (PAE) with the National Electricity Company of Senegal (Senelec).
The 20-year capacity change agreement therefore paves the way for the construction of the storage system at the Tobène substation in the Thiès region. The system will be capable of accumulating 40 MW of electricity, enough to “enable the electricity grid to exploit all available wind energy and provide ancillary services such as frequency regulation, reactive power support, as well as as the charging and discharging of energy,” says Infinity Power.
The storage batteries with a combined capacity of 175 MWh will be distributed across 45 40-foot (21 m) shipping containers. According to Infinity Power, installation of the system will begin in 2024 at the Tobène substation, with commissioning scheduled for 2025. According to Infinity, the storage system will reduce carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions . ) of around 37,000 tonnes per year.
For the record, the Taïba N'Diaye wind farm is made up of 46 turbines supplied and installed by the Danish company Vestas Wind Systems. The installation has a capacity of 158.7 MW, the largest wind farm in West Africa. This power represents 15% of Senegal's installed electrical capacity, 1,555 MW according to Power Africa. The park injects its production into the Senelec network. The park is capable of supplying 2 million people in Senegal, while avoiding emissions of 300,000 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent per year.
