Statkraft to begin construction of floating solar plant in Albania by end-June.

TIRANA (Albania) - Norway's Statkraft is looking to start the construction of a floating solar plant with a maximum capacity of 2 MW at the Banja reservoir in southeastern Albania by the end of June, it said on Tuesday.

“Now that all regulatory approvals are in place, we have issued a notice to proceed to Ocean Sun for implementing the first phase of the project. We look forward to start construction by the end of June,” Tom Kristian Larsen, head advisor IP strategy and asset management in Statkraft, said in a statement by the company.

The project, with a total investment cost of about 2 million euro ($2.26 million), will include two construction phases.

In the first phase, which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020, Statkraft's supplier, Norwegian floating solar technology developer Ocean Sun, will deliver a complete floating 0.5 MWp DC system at the reservoir.

The second phase will see Statkraft adding additional three floating 0.5 MWp units in 2021, bringing the total solar capacity on the Banja reservoir to 2 MWp.

Statkraft, a leading company in hydro power internationally and Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, is present in Albania through its wholly-owned subsidiaries Devoll Hydropower and Statkraft Renewables Albania.
