MOROCCO: Métito and Tahliya sign for water desalination using clean energy
Metito Utilities and Tahliya Group have chosen the COP28 village to sign an agreement on the development of two seawater desalination projects, powered by renewable energies in Morocco.
Metito Utilities will develop two water desalination projects using renewable energies in Morocco. The subsidiary of the UAE group Métito Holdings recently announced these projects, which will be implemented in collaboration with the Tahliya group. The partnership agreement was signed recently, on the sidelines of the 28e United Nations Climate Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United States. United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The UAE companies Metito and Tahliya will build two seawater desalination stations in the Sharifian kingdom. The treated water will be used to supply multi-user irrigation systems, while fresh water resources are drastically decreasing in Morocco due to drought.
Factories powered by renewable energy
“Morocco is a key market, as it promises immense potential as an investment center, given the diversity of assets and the conducive business climate. We will examine the possibility of mobilizing multiple pockets of capital and expertise to deliver planned projects, potentially including the African Water Infrastructure Development (AWID),” a>indicates the company managed by Mutaz Ghandour.
To date, barely 500 m3 of fresh water are available per inhabitant per year in the Cherifian kingdom, compared to 2 500 m3 in 1960 according to the United Nations (UN). New desalination plants are expected to improve water supplies for irrigation and drinking water.
The factories will be powered by renewable energies, notably solar and wind. This should contribute to reducing annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from installations, and therefore progress towards less energy-intensive and more sustainable desalination.
