EGYPT: Elsewedy wins the contract for a new wastewater treatment plant in Alexandria
The government of Egypt wants to improve sanitation services in the governorate of Alexandria, and is banking on a new wastewater treatment plant. The Kafr Abu Zohr plant will be built by the Egyptian company Elsewedy Electric Environmental Solutions.
Elsewedy Electric Environmental Solutions, a Cairo-based company, will implement the Kafr Abu Zohr water treatment plant project in Alexandria Governorate, in accordance with an agreement signed recently with the Construction Authority for Drinking Water and wastewater (CAPW) of Egypt. The contract provides for the design, supply of equipment, installation, civil works and turnkey commissioning of the wastewater treatment plant.
The station will treat 60,000 m3 of effluent produced in the governorate of Alexandria daily , before returning it to the natural environment. This project therefore aims to preserve the environment, mainly the fresh water resource which is currently polluted by wastewater, with risks for aquatic biodiversity and human health.
Investments in wastewater treatment
Elsewedy Electric wins the contract for the Kafr Abu Zohr wastewater treatment plant, less than three years after signing the contract for the Houd Negaih wastewater treatment plant , in Al Sharkia governorate, in the north east of Egypt. Built as part of the Sustainable Sanitation Services in Rural Areas (SRSSP) program, this other station will have a capacity of 6,000 m 3 per day when it is commissioned. Through the SRSSP, the Egyptian government aims globally to improve liquid sanitation in 769 villages, spread across seven governorates out of the 26 in the land of the pharaohs.
Founded in 1938 by the Elsewedy family with the primary mission of providing energy solutions, the Egyptian company has since proven itself in this sector, but not only that. The company also stands out in the water and sanitation sector with the added bonus of major contracts distributed between its 33 subsidiaries and 30 production units.
In addition to the Kafr Abu Zohr and Houd Negaih wastewater treatment plants, Elsewedy Electric was also chosen in July 2023 to build a water pump manufacturing center in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). Its subsidiary Elsewedy Industrial Development will implement this contract.
