Greenpeace supports António Guterres for abandoning fossil fuels

At the invitation of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), a Global Summit on Climate Ambition is being held on September 20, 2023 in New York in the United States of America. António Guterres takes this opportunity to call for a shift away from fossil fuels. To support this call from the head of the UN, Greenpeace mobilized hundreds of activists through more than 550 actions organized in 60 countries including Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

From Pacific nations, heavily affected by rising sea levels and storms, to Mumbai, Manila, London, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Yaoundé, more than 550 protests were organized in 60 countries, with the aim of organ a march in New York on September 17, 2023. This initiative by the nature defense organization Greenpeace, supports António Guterres' call for nations to make ambitious commitments to gradually eliminate fossil fuels, during the Climate Ambition Summit which he is convening for September 20, 2023 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In Yaoundé, Cameroon, Greenpeace activists gathered on Friday September 15, 2023 at the esplanade of the Tsinga sub-prefecture, to demand an end to the production of fossil fuels. “  Fossil fuels are poison for all generations. They are the primary cause of climate change. More than 90% of plastic, for example, is produced using fossil fuels. And here in Yaoundé as in several other cities in Cameroon, we are experiencing the effects of climate change. Families are increasingly suffering the horrors of floods. It is known that plastic blocks the gutters and when it rains the water does not circulate properly. Production must be stopped », Declares Marie Grace Ngo Mbog, the coordinator of Greenpeace volunteers in Cameroon.

“  In a city like Kinshasa where more than 15 million inhabitants are exposed to the toxicity of fossil fuels, we can only take courage with both hands to display a sign with a strong message: “Oil, gas and coal kills,  ” declares Jersey Mpanzu, the coordinator of Greenpeace volunteers in the DRC.

The Global Summit on Climate Ambition is being held on the sidelines of the 78th ^United Nations General Assembly. These meetings also aim to evaluate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Adopted on September 25, 2015 by the heads of state and government meeting at the Special Summit on Sustainable Development, the 2030 Agenda sets 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) broken down into 169 targets. These follow the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to respond to the challenges of globalization based on the 3 pillars of sustainable development, namely, the environment, social and economy.
