Regional Climate Weeks 2021 Partners to Present Communique to COP26 President

UN Climate Change News, 9 November 2021 – The Regional Climate Weeks 2021 were held throughout the year in advance of COP26. On Wednesday, 10 November at 13:15h, the heads of the organizing partner agencies UN Climate Change, UN Development Programme and UN Environment Programme, along with virtual representation by the World Bank, will present a COP26 Communique to the COP26 President at a High-Level Side Event. This COP26 Communique underscores the partners’ commitment to facilitate regional action and enable global progress.

The Regional Climate Weeks 2021 High-Level Side Event will feature a Communique Handover, with host government ministers joining heads of agencies onstage for a handover moment. COP26 attendees can join the event on the COP26 Platform by navigating to the COP26 Schedule and selecting the Derwentwater Room. The event can be watched starting at 13:15.

In remarks, leaders will present a Global Overview and outcomes of Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2021 (LACCW 2021) held in May, Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2021 (APCW 2021) in July and Africa Climate Week 2021 (ACW 2021) in September. The Communique is a redoubling of the commitment by partners to facilitate regional collaboration and implementation of COP26 outcomes.

The Regional Climate Weeks 2021 were designed to build momentum towards COP26 by taking the pulse of climate action in key regions, exploring climate challenges and showcasing ambitious solutions. As the year progressed, the Climate Weeks emerged as a platform for regional stakeholders to have their voice heard and contribute to COP26.

About the UNFCCC

With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.
