The Ugandan government is inaugurating a new drinking water supply system in the town of Kagadi, in western Uganda. The new facilities benefit 150,000 people.
The new drinking water supply system in Kagadi, Uganda, has been operational since 16 December 2022. The system was inaugurated by the Kagadi Resident District Commissioner, Tumusiime Benjamin. The Egyptian company Samcrete carried out all the work under a contract signed with the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment.
The work included the construction of ten groundwater pumping stations. The installations are equipped with electric generators to take over in the event of a power cut in the network.
Water for 150,000 people until 2040
The fresh water is transported through new pipes to four tanks of 600 m3, 300 m3, 200 m3 and 100 m3. Samcrete also built a gravity aerator and rapid filter, three sumps, suppression stations, 11 submersible pumps and six booster pumps.
The water is distributed via a new network. “Some 1,000 promotional consumer and intensification network connections in beneficiary communities (pipe sizes ranging from 15 to 40 mm in diameter) have also been made,” says the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment. All the facilities will secure the supply of drinking water to 150,072 people by 2040, particularly in the communities of Kagadi, Muhooro, Kyenzige, Mambugu, and Ruteete.

The operation and maintenance of the new facilities is being handled by the Umbrella of Water and Sanitation-Mid West (mwUws), the state-owned company that manages the piped water supply systems in the Central West region of Uganda. The project also has a hygiene component that has resulted in the construction of four public toilets and two hand-washing pumps.
