Cornwall and Virgin Orbit are committing to a partnership seeking to deliver a horizontal launch Spaceport at Cornwall Airport Newquay, UK, by 2021, creating a satellite technology cluster of national importance. A total of over £22 million (US$28 million) has already been pledged towards the project. Current plans involve integrating a solar farm located to the north of Newquay, large enough to create one megawatt of electricity, or enough to power 110 homes. The power output will equate to about 1% of the centre’s electricity uses. A second, much larger, solar energy complex currently being planned is projected to harvest 10 megawatts of electricity from sunshine. Excess power will ultimately be transferred to the grid, say the planners.
