Sierra Club: Trump’s Latest Environmental Rollbacks Are Yet Another Move To Cut Corners For The Coal And Fossil Fuel Industries

DETROIT, Michigan — This week, the Trump Administration is expected to announce a suite of rollbacks that bolster the coal and fossil fuel industries, threatening to keep our coal plants online longer and make our environment and climate dirtier. The administration is expected to revoke the Environmental Protection Agency’s longstanding greenhouse gas endangerment finding under the federal Clean Air Act, and roll back the mercury and air toxics standards for power plants and greenhouse gas emission standards for vehicles.

“The Trump Administration has already endangered all Michiganders by allowing the ancient Campbell coal plant to continue polluting our air with toxic fumes. Prior to the Trump administration’s fake emergency order, the original shutdown date for Campbell was agreed upon by state regulators, the private utility, and the community. These newest rollbacks add insult to injury by undercutting essential protections for our environment and climate, threatening our nation-leading clean energy laws, and putting the health and safety of all Michigan families at risk. Trump has shown yet again that this is of little consequence to him. The president would rather continue lining the pockets of corporate polluters than protect the well-being of everyday people. This suite of rollbacks will only endanger Michiganders at the same time Trump is giving handouts left and right to his coal industry buddies.”
