MADAGASCAR: a call for projects for sustainable management of marine protected areas

The government of Madagascar is launching a call for concept notes to marine protected areas (MPAs) and locally managed marine areas (LMMAs) to finance their sustainable management projects. Proposals are due by 8 August 2022.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) and locally managed marine areas (LMMAs) have the opportunity to participate in a programme to finance their sustainable management. To do so, they must respond to a call for concept notes recently launched by the Madagascan Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

The call for proposals is launched within the framework of the project “Extension and consolidation of Madagascar’s marine protected areas” implemented in partnership with the Madagascan branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM). The call for expressions of interest is open until 8 August 2022.

Projects submitted for consideration by the Malagasy government must focus on increasing and diversifying sustainable sources of income, improving community resilience and enhancing management efficiency through essential infrastructure and equipment, and developing and deploying management tools adapted to local conditions. Among the evaluation criteria retained by the Malagasy government are the innovative character, the control of the project area and the partnership with local actors, as well as public and private partners.

The 20 projects that will be selected at the end of the process will each receive financial support of between US$40,000 and US$60,000 over a 36-month period. The Madagascar Marine Protected Areas Extension and Consolidation project aims to support 25 of the 200 MPAs on the island. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
