Al Thumama Stadium Wins GSAS Certifications for Sustainability
Al Thumama Stadium has earned the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) 5-Star certification. This adds Al Thumama Stadium to other FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venues that earned the prestigious certification.
The certificate, which embodies excellence in the areas of sustainability, design and construction, was received by project manager for Al Thumama Stadium project Eng. Saoud Abdulaziz Al Ansari, from Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), Dr. Yousef Al Horr, in the presence of architect of Al Thumama Stadium Eng. Ibrahim Al Jaidah, and, Director of Sustainability and Environment at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) engineer Bodour Al Meer and a number of members of the project management team, as well as representatives of the GORD, and a group of various media representatives on the grounds of the stadium located in the Doha area.
Architect of Al Thumama Stadium Ibrahim Jaidah stressed that the State of Qatar is committed to promoting sustainability during the World Cup. He added that he was proud that the stadium was able to implement sustainability standards, saying they worked hard on saving energy, water, and using environmentally-friendly material that can be recycled in the future. Al Ansari added that the advantage Qatar had was it was building from scratch to prepare for the tournament, which allowed it to implement the sustainability stadium. He also said that Qatar National Vision 2030 focuses on sustainability.
For her part, Al Meer said that one of FIFA's requirements was that all stadiums earn at least one four-star green building certification. She said that all stadiums have earned three five-star certifications.
Meanwhile, Al Horr said that Qatari stadiums were committed to sustainability requirements, and added that the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy went above and beyond sustainability requirements to ensure the stadiums had the best sustainability standards compared to all previous World Cups editions.
