At least 3,000 participants, including businessmen, start-ups and local elected officials from Europe and Africa are expected in Marseille in France for the Emerging Valley summit. The seventh edition opens on November 18, 2023 with the usual objective of creating synergies for the sustainable development of both continents through technology.

On November 28 and 29, 2023, the French city Marseille regains its title of European capital of innovation. This is on the occasion of the seventh Emerging Valley summit focused on digital solutions for sustainable development. Carbon neutrality by 2030 for cities in Africa and Europe will be widely discussed according to the organizers. Other themes will also be addressed such as “how can modern technologies help preserve and enhance biodiversity in the face of natural risks?” » or even “faced with current geopolitical and climatic challenges, how to build a sustainable food future thanks to Agritech? »

“Emerging Valley 2023 will address societal, economic and environmental challenges, and will highlight the concrete solutions that digital companies from both continents can provide in the face of the multiplication of crises (climate and energy, Editor’s note),” explains its founder Samir Abdelkrim . This event is supported by the Research Institute for Development (IRD) based in Paris and by Euroméditérannée, the French public planning establishment.

Among the speakers expected in Marseille are Marieme Diop, regional director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for French-speaking Africa, Claude Borna the general director and head of Innovation of the Sèmè City Development Agency in Benin , Mamadou Touré, the Minister of Youth Promotion and Youth Employment of Côte d'Ivoire and Jean Van Wetter, the Director General of the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel).

During the sixth Emerging Valley in 2022, two African start-ups received the Med Innovant Africa prize for their projects focused on sustainable development. This is Wayout Ecological Solutions which developed the “Zigofiltre” solution to strengthen the sanitation networks of 11 Tunisian municipalities exposed to flooding during the rainy season. The second start-up “GreenBox” of Congolese origin was awarded an award for its solar fridge which helps fight against food waste. In 2023, two other African ideas will be rewarded in Marseille.
