Exploitation of hydrogen as an alternative fuel is not new. The release of energy without pollutants during its combustion, made it attractive to substitute oil and gas, as a clean fuel.
But we should not forget that for the production of hydrogen energy is needed, so hydrogen is a pure fuel as long as pure energy sources are used for its production, i.e. RES.
Hydrogen can be used as an alternative fuel in catalytic burners, gas boilers, gas turbines and internal combustion engines.
It is also used in fuel cell technology where electricity is generated by electrochemical reaction, with only by-product water.
It is estimated that in the future hydrogen produced from RES will play an important role:
- for energy storage
- as a clean fuel for decentralized energy production or transport
