Off-grid solar technology creates more than just energy access

GOGLA was founded in 2012 by some of the first off-grid solar lighting companies and has grown to include all sorts of technologies

Sarah Malm, Executive Director of GOGLA Sarah Malm explains how the off-grid solar sector drives clean energy access for millions in Africa.

The global association for the off-grid solar sector supports more than 200 companies, gathering key data and collaborating with governments on policies that facilitate market growth.

Off-grid solar technologies help reduce carbon emissions, improve farming, healthcare and education, and boost resilience with affordable, innovative solutions such as pay-as-you-go models.

“We advocate for the sector, we work for our members and our companies to ensure that there is good representation of the off-grid industry overall.

“We are the source of data, the source of many of the reports, we do the standards and consumer protection codes for companies, we also work in policy and regulation working, very closely with national governments around the policy and regulations like import duties and VATS that really impact the ability for companies to operate successfully.

“Then we convene the sector, working very closely with our members,” she told ESI Africa.

The off-grid sector is playing a role in climate effect mitigation in Africa as a cleaner source of energy. Malm pointed out that vulnerable populations who are accessing energy for the first time through a solar home system then also benefit from access to communication systems and information from weather data for agricultural purposes to healthcare and educational material.

Pointing to a 30% drop in investment in 2024, Malm stresses the need for more concessional finance, subsidies and partnerships to make energy affordable for low-income consumers.

Closing the energy access gap in Africa will require a mix of equity, debt, grants and strong government support.
