Indonesia plans 4.7 GW of new solar, greener mix by 2030
Indonesia is aiming to add 4.7 GW of solar capacity by 2030 under its new Electricity Procurement Plan (RUPTL) which will boost the contribution of renewables to the mix.
The “greener” RUPTL for the 2021-2030 period targets a 51.6% renewables share in new capacity additions. There are no plans for new coal beyond what has already been committed or brought under construction, which is around 14 GW.
The new capacity to be installed under the RUPTL is 40.6 GW. As the investment capability of national utility PLN is limited, Indonesia plans to allow greater participation of Independent Power Producers (IPP).
The planned additions could bring the share of renewable power in the national mix to 25% by 2030. At the end of 2020, it stood at 14% and the country is aiming at 23% by the middle of the decade.
"With the cost of building solar power systems is becoming increasingly lower and construction time faster, to fulfil the 23% target of renewables mix by 2025, the share of solar power systems is made bigger than in the previous RUPTL. In addition, the renewables mix target will be met by cofiring biomass at coal-fired power plants with due consideration of the environment when providing feedstock," energy minister Arifin Tasrif said in a presentation earlier this week.
The electricity plan also envisages greater interconnection of Indonesian islands, a de-dieselising programme and other measures.
