Ημέρα Περιβάλλοντος: Συνέχεια επιτυχιών για τη μονάδα αφαλάτωσης της Αιολικής Μήλου.

Με την ευκαιρία της Παγκόσμιας Ημέρας Περιβάλλοντος, σήμερα 5 Ιουνίου 2019, ανακοινώθηκε η απονομή των  βραβείων ENERGY GLOBE παγκοσμίως για  το έτος 2019. Στην Ελλάδα απονεμήθηκε στη μητρική εταιρεία του Ομίλου μας, ΙΤΑ, για τη Μονάδα Αφαλάτωσης με Χρήση Αιολικής Ενέργειας στη Μήλο.

Μετά το χρυσό βραβείο στα Environmental Awards 2018, έρχεται μια νέα διάκριση για τη μονάδα αφαλάτωσης με την απονομή ενός ακόμα βραβείου, του διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένου Energy Globe national award 2019.

Με περισσότερα από 182 συμμετέχοντα κράτη και πάνω από 2.000 υποβολές έργων ετησίως, το βραβείο ENERGY GLOBE είναι το πιο διακεκριμένο περιβαλλοντικό βραβείο σήμερα. Απονέμεται ετησίως σε έργα που εστιάζονται στην ενεργειακή απόδοση, τις ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας και τη διατήρηση των περιβαλλοντικών πόρων.

Desalination of seawater to potable using Wind power in the Island of Milos

The Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant of nominal capacity 4.500 m3/day is a state-of-the-art seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant, which was designed, constructed and operated by Aeoliki Milou S.A., a subsidiary of ITA Group of companies. The plant is located at an old bentonite clay mine at “Vouno of Triovassalos” site on the island of Milos of the Cyclades complex. It produces high quality potable water, in accordance with EU competent legislation 

Initial situation 
Until 2007, when the SWRO plant was inaugurated, the island of Milos used poor quality water, brackish and corrosive, coming exclusively from drilling, and mixed with expensive water that reached the island with aquifers. The cost of transporting the water to meet the island's needs was in the neighborhood of € 12 per cubic meter, which meant approx. 5 million € yearly, which is now down to less than a fifth of that cost. 

Solution 
The project operation led to the complete substitution of drinking water transported in tanker ships or pumped from local wells, which was of very poor quality and scarce availability. The technology used for the project is that of reverse osmosis, which requires only the electricity. The combination of the desalination plant with the wind turbine leads to optimal results for the island environment and the inhabitants of Milos leading the way down the path of sustainable development 

Innovation 
This technology involves reverse osmosis seawater desalination as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective option, compared to other water desalination technologies. It is the first CO2- neutral desalination project in Greece that does not burden the electric load of the local power network and the local thermal power production plant. It also the first desalination plant in Greece located after a special architectural survey, in order to minimize any negative effects to the landscape as far as visual intrusion is concerned.

ΜΗΛΕΙΚΑ ΝΕΑ
