With the start of operation of the first unit of the new Olkaria V geothermal power plant by Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen), we reported earlier today, Kenya has overtaken Iceland in the ranking of geothermal countries. This is based on the installed geothermal power generation capacity.

With unit 1 now online, Kenya’s total installed capacity is 726.6 MW and the global geothermal power generation capacity is 14,900 MW.

The second unit with the same capacity is expected to be synchronized soon  as well.

With the addition of the full Olkaria V plant, Kenya will increase its geothermal power generation capacity to 849 MW coming near to overtaking Italy with 944 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity.

The new top 10 ranking includes new addition in Costa Rica and several corrections from previously reported data with the status of July 29, 2019.
